Clive Wilkinson Architects is delighted to officially announce the appointment of a new Associate Principal, Bertram Beissel von Gymnich, to our practice!

Bertram, formerly the North America-based partner in the global architectural firm Ateliers Jean Nouvel, joins us following nearly 30 years of extensive international experience in high profile projects across Europe, Australia and the U.S. His award-winning work covers a broad range of scales, programs and typologies from performing arts centers and museums to residential towers.

To broaden the firm’s client offering, Bertram will be spearheading our diversification into ground-up building design and construction. After graduating from renowned architectural school ETH Zurich, Bertram’s professional experience includes periods with Rem Koolhaas and OMA in Rotterdam, Architecture-Studio in Paris, followed by 20 years as a partner with the Pritzker Prize-winning firm, Ateliers Jean Nouvel. Managing major building projects in Europe, Australia and the U.S. allowed Bertram to develop a deep insight into the makings of complex, high-quality architecture and the challenges of creating a unique response to context and stakeholders with each project. Bertram holds his architectural registrations in France, Switzerland and Australia.

In 2007, Bertram led the winning competition entry for the MoMA Tower (53W53) in New York. The New York Times critic Nicolai Ouroussoff hailed this project as “the most exhilarating addition to the skyline in a generation”. He also headed the design and construction of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which was featured in the 2008 Pritzker Prize jury citation. Under Bertram’s direction, One Central Park in Sydney, Australia, won the CTBUH Award for the Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2014.

Bertram’s role shall be to assume principal responsibility in overseeing design conception and development for our portfolio of projects, including project strategy and client relations. We are truly excited about how his depth of design expertise and experience will reinforce the firm’s capabilities and help realize our holistic vision in undertaking more architectural building challenges, in addition to our established interior architecture practice.

Last night, Santa Monica College (SMC) hosted the “2018 Interaction Design Grad Show”, a celebration of the college’s first 18 students to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Interaction Design (IxD). The first of its kind to be offered at a community college, the multidisciplinary major was designed to impart fundamental skills in interaction design, a field that blends user experience, design, and technology. This is a historic moment for SMC, as this was the first-ever graduation held at the new Center for Media and Design campus, which was designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects. Congratulations, Class of 2018!

Clive Wilkinson Architects will be hosting an AIA|LA City Leaders breakfast reception with KCRW President, Jennifer Ferro, at our Culver City office this Friday, June 1st, at 8 am. This is an opportunity to engage in a roundtable setting to discuss innovative ideas that will ensure a healthy, sustainable and economically competitive future. Space is limited, so please RSVP by emailing We hope to see you there!

As President of KCRW, Jennifer Ferro has worked to transform the institution from Southern California’s flagship public radio station to a worldwide digital content distributor that seeks to build community through the discovery of music, news and culture in person, online and on the air. Under her leadership, in addition to creating a hundred hours of original programming a week, KCRW completed a $48 million capital campaign and moved into its first-ever, stand alone, state-of-the-art facility this year. This new home will allow KCRW to become a true community institution.

Clive Wilkinson Architects recently completed the construction of Santa Monica College’s Center for Media and Design, an expansion of the school’s old Academy of Entertainment Technology. The new campus accommodates a 430-vehicle parking garage, a central courtyard, landscape improvements, a new Media Technology addition, and a new building for Angelenos’ favorite radio station, KCRW.

Technology is changing and advancing at an accelerated rate, and transportation is always at the forefront of that development. Dwell recently interviewed our President and Design Director, Clive Wilkinson, on his partnership with Ford. The American automaker invited Clive, a pioneer of workplace designs that place an emphasis on mobile working, to consider how automobiles are poised to evolve into rolling workplaces. With cars becoming more mobile work-friendly, and autonomous vehicles just around the corner, the future of the workplace might just involve a set of wheels. Read the full article here.

Clive Wilkinson Architects is excited to announce the launch of our new ground-up building project for high-quality bedding brand, Malouf, in Logan, Utah.

Malouf is an exceptional company, partly for being a new and highly successful bedding company and partly for being incredibly focused on social responsibility and their employees’ aspirations. The 210,000-square-foot building is as much about a work environment as it is about a total lifestyle concept, which is expressed in the design. The primary workspace is a circular form providing a 360-degree visual connection to the dramatic mountain landscape of Cache Valley. The rectangular bar building contains generous amenities spaces, including athletic courts, a fitness center, and a swimming pool. Both structures are connected to the existing warehouse building with an enclosed bridge.

An exterior undulating metal sunshade animates the façade and is also integral to building’s performance. The angle of the shade structure changes based on its solar orientation, as it is optimized to block solar heat gain and glare while preserving views during the hottest times of the year. The canopy structure levels out to the north and south to form decks that can be accessed from the workplace. These spaces may be used for impromptu meetings and provide employees with a strong sense of connection to the outdoors. Construction is targeted to commence in early 2019. The project team includes our Executive Architect GSBS Architects and Contractor Big-D Construction, both located in Salt Lake City.
